Moving to Ottawa: How to Choose the Right Neighbourhood

February 5, 2026 · 6 min read · All articles

Mature tree-lined residential street in Ottawa with a sidewalk and stone homes.

A practical way to narrow Ottawa's areas by commute, housing type and budget before you spend weekends touring the wrong side of the city.

Buyers relocating to Ottawa often start by touring homes. That is backwards. The city's areas differ enough that the neighbourhood decision determines most of what your budget buys.

Start with the commute, and test it

Travel times across the region vary substantially by hour and direction. Drive or ride your actual route at your actual departure time before committing to an area. A twenty-minute Sunday trip can be a very different weekday morning.

Then decide what housing type you want

  • Central and inner-west areas: older housing, walkability, higher price per square foot
  • West end such as Kanata: newer construction, more floor area, west-end employment
  • South end such as Barrhaven: family subdivisions, townhomes, more space per dollar
  • Established Nepean: mature lots, mid-century construction, closer in
  • East end such as Orléans: family housing, bilingual community, continuing transit investment

Confirm the specifics for the exact address

School catchments, parking rules and transit walking distance are address-specific in Ottawa, not neighbourhood-wide. Confirm them for the property you are considering rather than relying on a general description of the area.

Pick the street you can live with for a decade. The kitchen can change later.

Get a shortlist instead of a portal
